An email marketing campaign, prototype or a microsite being created? Then Canva has all your design needs cheaply and conveniently.
Welcome back to the Canva Booster Blog! In this blog post, I am going to show you how to create a landing page using Canva.
The Pros and Cons of Using Canva to Create Landing Pages
Pros
Easy to use
Convenient - huge library, mobile app, completely free
Great for prototyping and drafting web design layouts
Stay up to trend on the latest website designs
Copywriting from top to bottom in visual form
Cons
Not capable for multi-page websites, blogs or online stores (Use WordPress or Wix)
No hierarchical structure for website
No wireframing
Canva is well known for its convenience, value and ease-of-use when it comes to designing anything… especially websites (particularly microsites). In an increasingly competitive online environment, web designs have to stay up to trend in order to provide a seemingless, engaging user experience (UX).
Examples include one-page designs, playful app-like interactivity for the mobile, oversized typography and collage illustrations to name a few. The storytelling elements shouldn’t be missed.
If you’re a copywriter and if you’re missing the visual aspects, then you are actually doing it well from top to bottom; from the large authentic title straight towards the call-to-action at the bottom.
For those who prefer to create multi page websites, blogs or online stores as a new business owner, then Canva would not be the right app for you. You may need to use Wix, Wordpress or Squarespace for it. If you’re a pro UX/UI designer, you may need to use apps such as Figma or Adobe XD to wireframe or sketch your design; Canva focuses on the final design itself.
Size and Layout
Canva-designed landing pages can vary in any size or form:
For mobile-only sites, use ‘Your Story’ or ‘Instagram Story’ as the size (Dimensions: 1080 x 1920 px)
For desktop sites, use the standard video or presentation dimensions of 1920 x 1080 px - you definitely have all the space available to add web content
Alternatively, to save time and effort on creating another design piece, you can also convert your presentation and/or video into a website with ease and not having to design all over again - don’t forget the UI elements! This might be an advantage for Canva Pro users.
For a dynamic, minimal web layout, try playing around with grids, rows, columns or the ‘Rule of Thirds’, and either using a combination of each to make your design stand out! Paragraphs should not be long, there is more visual content to manipulate with.
The Project and Behind My Course Progress
This was the first section of the course Canva Next Level: Become a Canva Expert, where I have used my existing Canva design skills that got even better as I progressed through.
As part of my huge interest in DJing, the final product consisted of the landing page of a hypothetical EDM (Electronic Dance Music) record label. This featured a design and color palette that matches the brand personality of:
Excitement
But why? As if a DJ gets the crowd moving through ‘beat drops’, so does marketers with landing page designs. The ‘wow’ factor has to be created as always. You can view the landing page in the button below:
As you may have noticed, the color palette is more of a ‘neon’ type that you’ll find in nightclub and festival promotions involving DJs.
Final words
Creating a landing page on Canva should not be difficult. Canva is not only known for its convenience and great value, but allows for copywriting to be turned visual. I mean landing pages, email campaigns, mobile app prototypes and more… microsites come in different shapes, designs and sizes, and they should all try to tell a story behind!
But you may need to use Wix, Wordpress or Squarespace if you are creating a macro-website with multiple pages, blog content or online shopping features.
If you haven’t got a microsite yet, it’s now the time to design one thanks to Canva, in order to meet your brand’s marketing objectives correctly.
Have you ever used Canva to design your website? Would you rather prototype or build the final design? How does Canva compare with other apps when designing websites today? Feel free to comment below.
